COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Pittsburgh Penguins also have another P-word going for them: patience. Ronnie Lott Jersey . Brandon Sutter, Lee Stempniak and Jussi Jokinen scored in a span of 2:13 of the third period to revive the Penguins from yet another two-goal deficit in a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night. Now up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series, the Penguins got off to a horrible start, but took charge in the final two periods. "Its not ideal, especially when its 2-1 and you fall behind (by two goals) again," said captain Sidney Crosby. "Typically, its not the way you win hockey games. But it showed a lot of character and a lot of patience." A two-goal lead has been poison so far in the series. Columbus also blew a 3-1 lead in Game 1, then the Penguins returned the favour Saturday night. In each case the opponent scored the final three goals, the Blue Jackets taking their first playoff victory in double-overtime just 48 hours earlier in Pittsburgh. All three games have ended 4-3. "Anytime a team gets a lead they find a way to give it up," Sutter said. Game 4 is Wednesday night here. Down 2-0 early and then 3-1 in the third, the veteran Penguins scored on three consecutive shots. Coach Dan Bylsma called a timeout after goals by Boone Jenner and Jack Johnson staked the Blue Jackets to a 2-0 lead 3:18 in before a raucous, overflow crowd of 19,148. The Penguins collected themselves and then collected another comeback win. "We needed to reset," Bylsma said. The surge began with less than 2 seconds left in the second period when Brooks Orpik rifled a hard wrister past Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, making it 2-1. Just over a minute into the third period, the Blue Jackets pushed the lead back to two goals. Brandon Dubinsky, who had two assists, spun and fired a backhander that hit the glove of teammate Cam Atkinson and beat a surprised Marc-Andre Fleury. Fleury slammed the door after that. "I took it one shot at a time, tried to keep within the game," he said. "Just make the next save." His high-powered offence did the rest. The Penguins found their game, dominating with a 41-20 advantage in shots on goal and controlling the pace. Paul Martins shot from the point was redirected by Sutter. Just 1:10 later, Stempniak took a short pass from Kris Letang and waded in from the right wing, beating Bobrovsky. "A lot of guys here have won and been on long runs," said Stempniak. "They kept their belief. I think everybody just fed off of that. We generated a lot of shots and had a lot of opportunities. It was good to just keep going with it." Then Jokinen redirected Olli Maattas shot from the point and it glanced in off Columbus defenceman James Wisniewski, thoroughly deflating a crowd waiting to celebrate an historic win. "We played well," Maatta said. "At the end, it was a couple of bounces." Columbus last best chance came with 30 seconds left when Fleury made a blocker save on Ryan Johansens hard shot. "Theyve got a good team over there," said Dubinsky, who had two assists for the Blue Jackets, matching Martin and Beau Bennett of the Penguins. "We just have to find a way to rebound and be resilient. We have been all year long, so Im confident in this group." R.J. Umberger, the Columbus forward from Pittsburgh, said it was important for the young Blue Jackets to stay the course. In other words, be patient just like the veteran Penguins. "Its a long series still," Umberger said. "We cant let that be the turning point." The Blue Jackets were trying for their first playoff victory at home. They were 0-5 in the post-season until pulling off a stunning 4-3 double-overtime victory Saturday night in Pittsburgh. Much like after blowing a two-goal lead in Game 1, theyll have to find a way to regroup. "I dont think it was about stepping off the gas," coach Todd Richards said. "The attitude was good. We made a couple of mistakes and they started skating. That was the difference." PINEHURST, N. Vans Australia .C. -- Graham DeLaet played his first round at the U.S. Open not unlike his first round at the Masters. There were some nerves and there werent any birdies. The Canadian ended up posting a five-over 75 on the Pinehurst No. 2 course that left him 10 back of the lead. “I got off to a rough start,” DeLaet acknowledged after his round. “It might have been just a little bit of nerves. I wasnt hitting my driver great and then a couple of short-game miscues.” DeLaet started with bogeys on two of the first three holes, including a three-putt on the 12th hole from about 10 feet. Still, he didnt appear out of sorts on the course in the early going and after a bogey on the par-3 15th, he settled into a nice stretch, rolling off nine-straight pars. “I felt I got in a pretty good rhythm for the majority of the middle part of my round,” he stated. “I wasnt really able to make birdies, but I had a couple of tap-in pars that kept it stress free.” He stumbled in, however, making what he called disappointing bogeys on two of the last three holes. An errant tee shot on seven that landed in a bunker led to a bogey while on the last hole he was unable to get on the green in two. “It was disappointing to bogey seven and nine coming in because, if I was able to finish at three over, I would have been pretty happy,” he said. The stats show that DeLaet made 10 fairways – above average for the field – and 11 greens, also above the average. But on the greens, the putter didnt seem to be working. He used his flat stick 33 times, far too many, but easily understandable on Pinehursts difficult greens. “Its tough,” summed up DeLaet. “Its a tough round of golf. I felt like I handled it well. Unfortunately, I just didnt execute coming in.” DeLaets score came on a day when the field posted the lowest scoring average at a U.S. Open since 2003. The course average was 73.23 and there were more under par scores on Day One than in the opening rounds of the previous two years combined. But on a course that is playing this tough and with few birdie holes on the course, planning a comeback is not as easy. DeLaet understands that and will try to stay the course as he did in the first round. “Its just being patient,” he stated. “I was proud of myself for doing that all day even though its hard to aim a nine-iron 30 feet from the hole just trying to make four, but thats kind of what you have to do. Well see what happens, if I get a little behind the eight ball I might have to press. “Im not completely out of it. I know that a good round [Friday] will go a long way to getting back into it.” Discount Air Jordan 1 . -- For one night, Nick Calathes provided a big reason to believe the Memphis Grizzlies might be able to withstand the loss of Mike Conley on a short-term basis. Puig set the league on fire with his early summer debut racking up 122 hits, 19 homers and 11 steals in just 104 games, with an MLB rookie-best average of .319. Miller posted a 15-9 record for the NL-champion Cards, logging 173.1 innings. MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact want to turn the page on the first half of their season. Terry Dischinger Jersey . After 17 games — the midway point of Montreals third season in Major League Soccer — the Impact are dead last in the standings with a league-worst 3-9-5 record. The team will be looking to start anew when it takes on the Columbus Crew on the road on Saturday. "Its a brand-new season," said an optimistic Hassoun Camara. "We didnt do so well in the first part. We were expecting a lot better. We have to do everything to reverse the trend, and we have the players to do so. "Were technically sound, even more so than many teams in the league. What we need now is to meet those other teams intensity." Montreal is tied with the Chicago Fire for fewest wins on the season (3), and only the San Jose Earthquakes have scored fewer times than the Impact (17). The teams minus-12 goal differential is second worst in MLS behind only the Houston Dynamo. Despite their poor start to the season, the Impact are far from admitting defeat. "That wasnt an easy half of the year for us," said assistant coach Mauro Biello. "There are still a lot of games, and theres a lot of parity in this league. If we can string together a few good games, well be in a good position. We have to work hard, focus on the positive, and go from there." Though theyve picked up just 14 points from 17 games, Frank Klopas men are still only nine points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Playing in a league where streaking teams can quickly climb in the standings, the Impact are hoping a few positive results will finally get the ball rolling. "Were only halfway through the season," said striker Jack McInerney, whos scored six goals in 12 games for Montreal. "Weve played good soccer lately; we just havent gotten the results. There are still plenty of points on the table. Going forward, were going to have to do everything right." The Impact will start the second half of their season at Columbus Crew Stadium facing a side going through a lengthy rough patch of their own. After starting the season with three wins in a row, the Crew (4-7-8) have only won once in their last 16 MLS matches, and are winless in their last seven. Columbus, a club known this season for its successful passing and long spells of possession, is coming off a tough midweek loss against Kansas City. On Wednesday, a stoppage-time goal by Sportings Benny Feilhaber handed the Crew their second loss in a row. With Saturdays opponents on just two days rest, McInerney is calling the game against Columbus a perfect matchup for the Impact. "Theyre struggling also," he said. "Going in there, were really going to have to defend, play on the counter, and see what we can get on the break. Its a winnable game, so we have to go into it looking for the three points." Like the Crew, Montreal wants to move on from a heartbreaking loss against Kansas City. Last Saturday, a defensive mistake gifted all three points to Sporting when defender Heath Pearce and goalie Troy Perkins got their wires crossed and failed to clear a harmless ball away from the penalty box in the 89th minute. The week before, the Impact conceded a stoppage-time goal to Chivas USA for its first loss since returning from the World Cup break. The Impact had not dropped back-to-back contests since losing its first three to start the season. On Saturday, Montreal will look to take advantage of a depleted Columbus lineup that lost two of its players to injury in the last couple of weeks. Crew forward Jairo Arrieta left a July 12 game against the New York Red Bulls with a left hamstring strain, and has not played since. Hector Jimenez, an offensive-minded midfielder for Columbus, sprained his knee on July 4. Both have been ruled out for the game versus Montreal. Arrietas and Jimenezs absence will make things easier for an Impact backline that has been showing signs of improvement lately, despite consecutive losses. Montreal has conceded just three times in four games, and has recorded four clean sheets in its last seven in all competitions. "Were on the right track," said Biello, whose team is the only one in MLS without a road win this season (0-5-3). "Look at our last few games, the team is playing better. If we can do that on the road, along with the quality we have up front, we can get a result. A few draws and victories on the road will give us a good chance to make the playoffs." That will depend largely on the Impacts offence, which has been stale all season. Montreal has scored more than two goals just once this year — a 3-0 victory against Houston at the end of June. Goals have been especially hard to come by away from home, where the Impact have scored just five times in eight games. McInerney says Montreal has to start getting more players forward. "Weve put in a lot of work defending, because we had some struggles keeping the ball out of the net," said the 21-year-old. "But too many people are sitting back now. We have to get numbers in the box; its the only way were going to create opportunities for the team and create chances." The Impact and Crew will play each other twice more after Saturdays contest — on Aug. 30 in Montreal, and on Sept. 27 in Columbus. Notes: Marco Di Vaio, who has found the back of the net twice in his last three games, has three career tallies versus Columbus. The Blueshirts hope to stay alive once again when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins in Sundays Game 6 battle at Madison Square Garden. New York recorded a 5-1 victory Friday evening in Pittsburgh to cut its series deficit to 3-2. It was the first win for the Rangers since they claimed Game 1 in the Steel City by a 3-2 score in overtime. In order to extend this best-of-seven set to a decisive seventh game, however, New York will have to pick up its first home victory of the series. The Rangers lost Games 3 and 4 at MSG to the Pens and were outscored by a combined 6-2 margin in those contests. New York is 3-3 on home ice in this postseason, but has won its last five games at the Garden when facing elimination. The Rangers are 8-2 over their last 10 elimination games overall. The Rangers hope to build off Fridays emotional victory in Pittsburgh. Perhaps drawing additional inspiration from the presence of forward Martin St. Louis, who returned to the team one day after his mother, France, suddenly passed away in his native Quebec, the Rangers sense of urgency was evident right from the start in Game 5. St. Louis registered just one shot on goal in 16-plus minutes of ice time, but his participation in the game was enough to inspire his teammates. "We played for Marty and his family," said Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. "Thats the thing we had going for us." It expects to be another emotional night on Sunday, as St. Louis sister and father expect to be in attendance at MSG. New York outshot the Penguins 10-3 over the games opening 10 minutes and peppered Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury with 17 chances while jumping out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. After mustering a mere two goals over three straight losses in their Eastern Conference semifinal series, the Rangers scored four over the first two periods en route to the blowout victory. Derick Brassard led the charge with a pair of goals and an assist, with Mats Zuccarello lending three helpers to supporrt a 31-save effort from Lundqvist. Antawn Jamison Jersey. Ryan McDonagh and Chris Kreider each added a goal and an assist, while Kevin Klein tacked on an empty-net tally to finish off the rout. "We needed to step up tonight," said Brassard. "I dont think the last two games ... we were OK. We didnt play bad but we were nothing special. We just tried to play hard today. We had some lucky bounces and we made some plays." Kreider, playing for just the second time in this postseason after missing time with a broken hand, began New Yorks outburst by putting home a long rebound of a McDonagh shot with the Rangers on the power play midway through the first period. The goal snapped an 0-for-36 drought with the man advantage for New York, tied with the 2007 Anaheim Ducks for the longest in NHL playoff history. The Rangers finished the night 2-for-3 on the power play and is 5-for-47 with the man advantage in this postseason. "I think weve been doing some things well on the power play," Kreider said. "Its hard when you see that looming statistic. But its nice when you finally get one. I think it was huge. I think it was a really important goal." Evgeni Malkin had the lone goal for Pittsburgh, which is trying to go 5-0 all- time in playoff series against the Rangers. Fleury, who helped Pittsburgh build a 3-1 series lead by recording shutouts in Games 2 and 3, stopped just 30-of-34 shots on Friday. "They came really hard, really aggressive down the walls," Pittsburgh head coach Dan Bylsma said of the Rangers. "We turned over a few pucks as a result, let to their offensive-zone time. In addition to that we had some unforced errors." Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik did not play after sustaining an undisclosed injury in Wednesdays Game 4 win. Robert Bortuzzo filled in for Orpik in Game 5 and will likely do so again on Sunday. Pittsburgh is 9-2 all-time in series when holding a 3-1 lead. The last time the Penguins blew a 3-1 lead was in the 2011 Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Tampa Bay when both Sidney Crosby and Malkin were injured and missed the series. ' ' '
Englands batsmen need to reassess their risk management in the wake of Pakistans 75-run victory in the first Test at Lords, says Nasser Hussain. Don Chandler Jersey . Set 283 to win, the home slipped to 47-3 when Joe Root was caught in the deep before James Vince edged to slip and Moeen Ali was bowled for a duck charging Yasir Shah.Although Jonny Bairstow (48) and Chris Woakes (23) kept Pakistan at bay for more than 31 overs, the failure of the top order batsmen cost England dear. Watch the best of the action from the fourth day of the first Test between England and Pakistan at Lords Bairstow comes out of this game with a lot of credit, I have to say, for the way he fought with Chris Woakes - he gave it absolutely everything, said Hussain. He changed his technique against the leg-spinner in the second innings, which shows hes a quick learner.Weve seen a lot of ability from Bairstow over the last few months, but weve seen a lot of character from him. It puts into perspective some of the shots that went on before that.I hope Moeen was watching Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes battle it out and questioning his shot selection and the way that he got out. Woakes, in particular, showed that there were no demons in Yasir Shah. Head coach Trevor Bayliss gave his thoughts after Pakistan beat England 75 runs at Lords Speaking on Sky Sports, Hussain admitted he felt Moeens dismissal had been particularly reckless. There is nothing wrong with running down the pitch to a spinner and getting out, he wont be the first batsman to ever do that. But if the shot is not on, you need some kind of release shot, a plan B, he said.Just to say Im coming at you whatever, is so frustrating, because Moeens better than that. Just two Test matches ago he got 150. He has a bit of a what will be, will be attitude and Id like him to be a bit tougher than that. Alastair Cook and Misbah-ul-Haq give their reaction to Michael Atherton after Pakistans 75 run victory over England at Lords. He can still play with flair and fluency play in the way he did against Australia last year by being positive, but also play the situation and have a plan B.As Bairstow showed in the second innings, you can survive on this pitch. Its hard to get people out. Moeens shot was one of a man who thought I need runs before they soon get me. To charge Yasir fourth ball was reckless. There wasnt enough risk management in most of Englands innings - like Roots shot in the first innings.I have no problem with Roots dismissal in the second innings - if you dont play any shots, you dont score any runs. The Toronto Argonauts are North Americas oldest professional football franchise. Joe Maddon Jersey . But theyre also homeless and nomadic - a description that isnt new for the team over the last few decades. With building time, pressure and ownership uncertainty, its a challenge that members of the organization can no longer ignore. The Argos are first in the East Division (albeit with a 3-7 record), but the team has used three different practice facilities across the Greater Toronto Area over the last month. Theyve been at York University, the Hershey Centre in Mississauga and the Rogers Centre for meetings and locker rooms, while occasionally practising on different high school and community fields in North and West Toronto. Several veteran players and team staffers - who wish to remain anonymous - approached TSN in recent weeks to their concern and frustration over the negative affect the Argos constant changing of facilities and cloudy ownership situation continue to have on the club. Players have also sent in photos of equipment stuffed in narrow hallways and around players trying to get treatment for injuries from the training staff. "This whole thing is a joke," one veteran player told TSN. While the team moved into a new, permanent facility at Downsview Park in North Toronto (shared with Toronto FC) last week, there was still unhappiness with the situation. "Does it affect how we prepare (for games)? Yes," said another veteran player. "Do I think about it while Im on the field, between plays? No. But its always in the back of your mind." The situation seems comparable to two years ago when a fire destroyed the Argonauts facility at the University of Torontos Mississauga campus and the team was forced to work in the schools classrooms along with neighbouring high school football fields. And that team went on to win the 100th Grey Cup that season. "In 2012, we used our facilities - or lack of - as motivation to win a championship," added another player. "Now? Many of us are tired and frustrated. But what can we do?" While the players say that trying to work around unpredictable locations and schedules without violating the 4 1/2 hour workday rule mandated in the leagues collective bargaining agreement is tough, the CFL Players Association told TSN that no complaints have been filed over excessive workdays or unfit working conditions. The reason players have chosen to stay quiet appears to be the efforts of head coach Scott Milanovich and his coaching staff to maintain calm inside the locker rooms. And those efforts have not gone unnoticed. Players say that Milanovich never complains about the teams situation, but simply brings a detailed plan to every practice and demands that his players perform. "I cant imagine what Coach Scott is going through," said defensive back Jalil Carter prior to the Labour Day Classic in Hamilton. "He takes all that frustration onto himself. And we never see it. He just allows us to compete." Milanovich declined to comment on Torontos practice facilities or ownership situation. "Im just trying to prepare our guys to win the East," he said flatly. "Our goal is to be one game away from the Grey Cup. Thats it." But not knowing the franchises future is a disheartening distraction for the players. And off the field, team staffers are concerned about diminishing budgets and a diminishing workforce. The team has been without a head of ticket sales and corporate partnerships this season. And after the Argonauts director of marketing resigned in August, team staff have said the team will effectively have no marketing department later this month. By comparison, other CFL franchises have no fewer than two marketing directors - and in some cases, as many as six full-time marketing staffers. On top of that, the teams lease at the Rogers Centre expires Dec. 31, 2017 and the Argos have not yet drawn more than 20,000 spectators to any of their four home games. "I have no idea what is going on (with the ownership situation)," a veteran said. "I dont know who to blame." One prominent Argo whos considering a contract extension says that while his connection with the current roster and coaching staff is important, he cant help but factor in the stress caused by the unpredictability with their practice facilities. And that dithering has already hurt the Argos. CFL sources tell TSN that Toronto made a contract offer to re-sign free agent defensive back Pat Watkins in the off-season, but Eskimos head coach (and former Argos defensive coordinator) Chris Jones brought the CFL All-Star to Edmonton to show him the teams state-of-the-art fieldhouse near Commonwealth Stadium. After that, Watkins never returned the Argos calls. Jones also made sure that his new acquisition shared his Toronto experience with his new teammates. "Coach Jones brought Pat and I up (in front of the team) to tell everyone where we had come from and the challenges we faced (with facilities) in Toronto," said Eskimos offensive lineman and former Argo Tony Washington. "He wanted the team to be thankful for what we have." Even after the Argos move to Downsview Park, its still difficult for some in the organization to feel pleased. After the first week at the new facility, a team staffer told TSN that the new challenge is managing the Argos work schedule - particularly washing equipment - around that of Toronto FC. In July, the team announced a partnership with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment to build training facilities. Some in the organization call them "modular buildings" - structures built off-site and then set down in Downsview Park. For others, theyre simply called "trailers." Nevertheless, Milanovich and his coaching staff are maintaining a constructive outlook, focused on holding their lead in the East Division. But with mounting questions about David Braleys ownership of the team and how the CFL should handle the situation, Toronto players and staff are wondering aloud how the situation will continue to affect their performance. "Sometimes you have to remind yourself: This is a professional franchise," said one player. "Its frustrating." Tyson Miller Jersey . PITTSBURGH, Pa. Bill Bates Jersey . - The Pittsburgh Pirates believe theyre building something special. The San Francisco Giants provided a reminder that much work remains to be done before a contender becomes a champion.Geared up for another run at Buctober, Pittsburghs post-season journey lasted all of 3 hours, 12 minutes, just long enough for Madison Bumgarner and the Giants to overpower the Pirates for an 8-0 victory in the NL wild-card game Wednesday night.Bumgarner tossed a four-hitter while striking out 10, and Brandon Crawford hit the first grand slam by a shortstop in post-season history as the Giants put an abrupt end to Pittsburghs second straight post-season appearance. We got outplayed tonight, second baseman Neil Walker said. Bumgarner went out there, he did what he wanted to do. He put up the strike zone and he made it tough on us. When they got up early on us we were trying to scratch and claw our way back, and he was good from the first pitch until the last pitch. The ones in between, too.Pittsburgh was unable to duplicate last years victory over Cincinnati in the wild-card game that followed a 21-year playoff drought. Playing before raucous crowds at PNC Park, the Pirates pushed St. Louis to a decisive Game 5 before losing their NLDS.This year, Pittsburgh went 17-9 in September while taking the Cardinals to the final day of the season in an attempt to win the NL Central. The chase included a decision to start budding ace Gerrit Cole in the regular-season finale in the hopes of catching the Cardinals and avoiding the wild-card game. Cole struck out 12 in a brilliant performance but the Pirates lost, putting Pittsburghs hopes for extending its season on Edinson Volquezs excitable shoulders. The former All-Star a€” in the midst of a mid-career renaissance after winning a team-high 13 games a€” navigated three innings in the biggest start of his career before it all unraveled in the fourth, when a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs.Crawford followed with a drive that kept carrying all the way to the seats above the 21-foot high Roberto Clemente wall to quiet the largest crowd in the 13-year history of PNC Park.I tried to bounce it down, back foot, and the ball just kept going, Volquez said. Bad spot.Bumgarner did the rest as San Francisco won its eighth consecutive post-season game and seventh in a row when facing elimination.Overpowering one of the NLs best lineups, Bumgarner walked one and threw 79 of 109 pitches for strikes in his latest stellar October performance. The big left-hander, who allowed only four singles, has thrown 15 scoreless innings in two World Series starts.Brandon Belt drove in three runs as San Francisco added on. That was more than enough for Bumgarner, who mixed his fastball with a slider the Pirates couldnt seem to figure out.Pittsburgh, fourth in the majors in extra-base hits this season, rarely hit the ball hard.A professional, well-pitched game by him, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. We tried to counter-punch, we just couldnt muster up anything.Bumgarner was helped by his defence, too. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval a€” all 245 pounds of him a€” flipped over the railing in front of the Pittsburgh dugout to track down a foul popup off the bat of Russell Martin.Sandoval landed on his feet, a perfect symbol of San Franciscos seemingly endless resiliency this time of year. Back in the playoffs after winning the World Series in 2010 and 2012, the Giants are looking to continue their every-other-year success. We thrive in these situations, Crawford said. I dont know what it is. We just keep fighting no matter what the circumstance. Its a path the Pirates insist theyre on after winning 94 games last season and backing it up by going 88-74 this year despite a series of obstacles, including extended stays on the disabled list for Cole and Francisco Liriano, and an offence that didnt start to click until utility man Josh Harrison found a spot in the everyday lineup in mid-May.Not to take away from this year, we know it was a good season, Harrison said. But these losses right here hurt. Its not anything anybody would ever get used to. At the end of the day we still know that we are fortunate enough to be in this situation. There were a lot of teams that were eliminated on Sunday. And we had a chance to win tonight and play more.Instead the Pirates could only watch as San Francisco piled on against Pittsburghs normally reliable bullpen. A sizable portion of the crowd a€” most of the fans dressed in black a€” remained until the bitter end. There was a standing ovation after the final out even as the Giants poured onto the field in celebration. An important off-season lies ahead as Pittsburgh tries to re-sign catcher Russell Martin and figures out how to address potential holes in the rotation with Volquez and Liriano becoming free agents.Owner Bob Nutting says the normally frugal Pirates will do what they can to keep Martin and build around a nucleus that includes Harrison, Cole and Andrew McCutchen. If last falls success was a breakthrough following 20 years of misery, this falls failure revealed the gap between the Pirates and a championship team is narrowing, but not quite closed. Its not like were 90-plus wins saying weve got work to do, McCutchen said. We were in the wild card again and there are things we need to improve. SECAUCUS, N.J. -- The Houston Astros had the No. 1 pick again, and this time, they took a pitcher polished beyond his years. California high school left-hander Brady Aiken was the first selection in the Major League Baseball draft Thursday night. "Its the most advanced high school pitcher Ive ever seen in my entire career," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "He has command like Ive never seen before of his stuff." The 17-year-old from San Diegos Cathedral Catholic High School is just the third prep pitcher to be selected first overall, joining fellow lefties Brien Taylor (1991, Yankees) and David Clyde (1973, Rangers). The Miami Marlins made it the first time high school pitchers were the top two picks in the draft when they selected Tyler Kolek, a hard-throwing right-hander from Shepherd High School in Texas. Twenty pitchers were taken in the first round, tying the draft record set in 2001. The Astros are the first team to select first in three consecutive drafts, having picked shortstop Carlos Correa in 2012 and right-hander Mark Appel last year. Aiken is in line to receive a huge contract. The allotted slot bonus for the top pick is nearly $8 million. "Unbelievable. Its really a dream come true," Aiken said. "This is something that Ive wanted ever since I was a young kid. Im at a loss for words. This is my dream and its finally starting to come true." Aiken is also the first high school lefty to be drafted in the first five picks since Adam Loewen went fourth overall to Baltimore in 2002. The UCLA recruit, who compared himself to Clayton Kershaw and David Price, has terrific control of a fastball that hits 96-97 mph, a knee-buckling curve and a tough changeup that sits in the low- to mid-80s. The 6-foot-5 Kolek has a fastball that sits in the high-90s and touched 100-102 mph several times, causing many to compare him to fellow Texas flamethrowers such as Nolan Ryan, Kerry Wood and Josh Beckett. "How do you pass up a guy throwing 100?" Marlins manager Mike Redmond said after Miamis 11-6 win at Tampa Bay. "So, Im happy with the pick. Its a big, old, country strong right-hander." The Chicago White Sox selected North Carolina State left-hander Carlos Rodon with the third overall pick. The 6-3, 235-pound junior was widely regarded as the top college pitcher available and had been in the mix to go No. 1 overall. He followed a dominant sophomore year with a solid but not spectacular junior season. Indiana slugger Kyle Schwarber went No. 4 overall to the Chicago Cubs as the first position player selected. He is a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award as the best catcher in Division I, although he could move to third base or the outfield in the pros. "Well let that play out," Cubs senior vice-president of scouting and player development Jason McLeod said. Nick Gordon, the son of former big league pitcher Tom Gordon and brother of Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon, went fifth overall to Minnesota. The Florida high school slick-fielding shortstop was the first of the seven prospects in attendance at MLB Network Studios to have his name called by Commissioner Bud Selig, who is retiring in January and presiding over the draft for the final time. After a few interviews, Gordon breathed a big sigh of relief and gave his father a hhuge hug. Robert Newhouse Jersey. "This is a proud moment. Its hard to describe," Tom Gordon said. "I have nothing but pride and pure joy for my boys." Gordon, from Orlandos Olympia High School, also has some family bragging rights now: His father was a sixth-rounder by Kansas City in 1986, while his brother was a fourth-rounder by Los Angeles in 2008. "Were pretty much the same player," Nick Gordon said of the brothers. "You know, hes got a little bit more speed than I do, Ive got a little bit more pop than he does. But, you know, we model our game after each other." A few other players followed in the footsteps of famous family members. Wichita State first baseman Casey Gillaspie went 20th overall to Tampa Bay, 17 spots ahead of where his brother Conor, the White Soxs third baseman, was picked in 2008. "I cant really compare myself to him because hes in the big leagues," Casey said. "It was cool when it happened, but now Im just ready and focused." San Francisco outfielder Bradley Zimmer was taken 21st by Cleveland. His brother, Kyle, was the fifth overall pick by Kansas City in 2012. With the next pick, Detroit took California high school outfielder Derek Hill, whose father Orsino was a first-rounder in January 1982 and is now a scout for the Dodgers. California high school catcher Alex Jackson went sixth to Seattle, which intends to move him to the outfield. "Ive been playing multiple positions my whole life," Jackson said. "Its nothing extra ordinary that has been thrown my way. Im looking forward to getting out there competing." LSU righty Aaron Nola was the seventh overall selection by Philadelphia. Evansville lefty Kyle Freeland, a Colorado native, went No. 8 to the Rockies and said hes used to pitching in the thin Denver air and isnt afraid of it. East Carolina right-hander Jeff Hoffman went ninth to Toronto, which also took Kennesaw State catcher Max Pentecost two picks later. The New York Mets rounded out the top 10 picks by selecting Oregon State outfielder Michael Conforto. In the year of Tommy John surgery in baseball, two pitchers who recently had the operation were selected in the first 18 picks -- a sign that teams are confident in the success rate of the procedure. Even though theyll likely be sidelined for 12-18 months, Hoffman and UNLV righty Erick Fedde (No. 18 to Washington) remained attractive prospects. Vanderbilt righty Tyler Beede was the 14th overall pick by San Francisco, becoming the 18th player in draft history to be selected in the first round of two June drafts. He went 21st to Toronto in 2011. St. Louis wrapped up the first round of the draft, which is held over three days and 40 rounds, by selecting California high school righty Jack Flaherty at No. 34 -- seven picks after taking Florida State right-hander Luke Weaver. Gareth Morgan, from Toronto, was the first Canadian selected this year. The right-handed outfielder was drafted out of Blyth Academy by the Seattle Mariners, 74th overall. "Im honoured that the Mariners selected me and its also very special to be the first Canadian to be taken in the draft," said Morgan from his home in Toronto where he was following the draft with his family. "I have worked very hard throughout my career for this moment and Im excited for what the future holds." ' ' '
ARLINGTON, Texas - After Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning torched their defence, the Dallas Cowboys get no respite. Cheap Jordan 1 Australia . Up next are Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins. The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor returns to Texas after embarrassing Dallas with a huge second quarter to win his first NFL game in his home state last Thanksgiving. Coverage begins with Football Night in America, tonight at 7pm et/4pm pt on TSN. Kickoff follows at 8:15pm et/5:15pm pt. Dallas defenders are at a low point again because Tony Romos franchise-record 506 yards passing and five touchdowns werent enough in a 51-48 loss to Manning and Denver last weekend. "Weve got a sense of pride in this group," Dallas defensive tackle Jason Hatcher said. "I know Im hurting because Im part of this defence. One thing weve got to do, weve got to clean it up. We got another good quarterback coming in here." The Redskins go into Sunday nights game at the $1.2 billion home of the Cowboys with similar problems. Theyre last in the NFL in passing defence, one spot behind Dallas. But Washington is coming off a win over Oakland and a bye after starting the season 0-3, while the Cowboys are trying to avoid their first three-game losing streak since 2010. "Yeah, that was our goal — go into that last game before the bye week, get the win, allow that momentum to carry us the rest of the way throughout the season," said Griffin, who threw for more than 300 yards in all three losses. "I think everybody has the right mindset coming back rejuvenated, ready to go." Griffin and Alfred Morris combined to give Washington its first sweep of Dallas since 2005 last year. Griffin completed all eight passes for 178 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-point second quarter, and the Redskins held on for a 38-31 win on Thanksgiving. In the finale with the NFC East title on the line, Morris rushed for a career-high 200 yards and three scores in a 28-18 victory. That put the Redskins in the playoffs for the first time in five years and extended Dallas post-season drought to three years. But now Griffin is less of a dual threat while he continues his recovery from knee surgery, and Morris isnt getting the same number of carries because the Redskins fell behind in all three losses. "Theyre best when they hand him the ball," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Morris. "Hes a good football player and they want to run the football. And we have to be prepared to stop him because a lot of what they do comes off his success running the football." Here are five things to know as the Redskins go for their first three-game winning streak against the Cowboys since 1988: ROUGH WEEK FOR ROMO: Hes getting beaten up again for another late-game mistake that spoiled an otherwise sublime day. This time it was Danny Trevathans interception at the Dallas 24 in the final two minutes, leading to Denvers winning field as time expired. "He played his butt off," Hatcher said. "We didnt give them a chance to win. So its on the defence." NICKNAME DEBATE: The Redskins are playing their first game since President Barack Obama joined others in saying the team should consider changing its nickname over concerns that its offensive to Native Americans. And this week, owner Daniel Snyder renewed his support of the name in a letter to season ticket-holders. "You dont want to minimize anything thats going on outside of these walls, but inside these walls we have to focus on football and thats what our goal has to be," Griffin said. BEVY OF RECEIVERS: Dallas rookie Terrance Williams had a career-high 151 yards with Miles Austin out for a second straight game with a hamstring problem. It appears Austin will be back, which means Romo has six guys who have made big plays in the passing game this year. Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar and Cole Beasley are the others. "Theres no other way to put it," said Bryant, who has six touchdowns. "We are explosive. Thats our identity: our explosive offence." BACK FROM SUSPENSION: Defensive end Jarvis Jenkins and linebacker Rob Jackson will play their first games for the Redskins since their four-game suspensions ended last week. Jenkins tested positive for a banned performance enhancing substance, while Jackson was suspended under the NFLs drug policy. Both said their violations were unintentional. QB PRESSURE: These teams are trending in opposite directions with the pass rush. The Cowboys had just one sack total against Rivers and Manning after getting 13 the first three games. The Redskins had a season-high seven against the Raiders, just the second time theyve had that many since 2010. ___ Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org ___ Follow Schuyler Dixon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/apschuylerAir Max 90 Australia . As if the individual strands of grey hair or the increasing amount of joint pain werent reminders enough, the impending end of Jeters career is a slap-in-the-face indicator of a generations fleeting youth.(SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Foley is arguably the best motivational speaker of this generation. Foley does his preparation in a van down by the river. Kobe Bryant knows how to light a fire under those who are willing to listen, only he constructs his case on the basketball court. Because hes Kobe Bryant, there are zero repercussions when he calls his Los Angeles Lakers teammates soft or berates them with expletives that would make Ralphie Parkers father cringe (Yes, A Christmas Story reference). You see, Parkers father worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. Bryant behaves in similar fashion when he wants to motivate. Hes Kobe Bryant. He can do that. And if anyone has the audacity to question the five-time champion and 16-time All-Star, they better be ready for a challenge. Bryant put on a show in Thursdays practice and vehemently expressed displeasure with words that belong in an R-rated movie or the mouth of a sailor. He described them as Charmin or soft like the name-brand toilet paper, and knows the 2014-15 season has been in the toilet with a 6-16 record. Theres still a chance to revive the season, but it doesnt appear possible even with a spry Bryant in the twilight of his career. Wearing practice gear and talking with a swagger, Bryant sorts through defenders toward the hoop: gawkers to one side; wannabe defenders, curious onlookers and more amazed teammates on the other. More teammates and coaches watch elsewhere, impressed he still has it. Bryant, who said he enjoys practice more than the game unlike former Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson, thrives on testing his teammates. I just challenge guys, see what happens, Bryant said Thursday. I always believed in throwing them in the pool and seeing if they can sink or swim. The only one swimming is Bryant and it has to be difficult for the future Hall of Famer with nobody else around him. Any so-called basketball expert knew the Lakers would struggle coming into the season. Jeremy Lin has been benched, veteran point guard Steve Nash and talented rookie Julius Randle are done for the season and Jordan Hill is the second leading scorer with 13.0 points per game behind Bryants 25.5 ppg. Carlos Boozer is now coming off the bench and is third with 12.5 ppg. Bryant can fire up, insult or compliment his teammates as much as possible, and its not going to reflect in the standings. He recently had breakfast with Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, leading many to speculate whether Bryant is courting the assist machine. Lets face it, the Lakers would still struggle with Rondo on the team unless the NBA decided on a whim to send Los Angeles to the Eastern Conference. Perhaps Lakers legend and Hall of Famer Magic Johnson has a point when he said the team should tank the season. I hope the Lakers lose every game, Johnson said. Because if youre going to lose, lose. And Im serious. If youre going to lose, youve got to lose, because you cant be in the middle of the pack. You either have to be great, or youve got to be bad to get a good pick. Johnson should mind his own business and remain focused on improving the Dodgers. He has the right to his own opinion and should keep it quiet. Time is running out for Bryant and who knows how many years remain for the Black Mamba. He cann still score and is proving that on a nightly basis, and is also a great teacher, leader and mentor. Cheap Air Max 95 Australia. Bryant said Thursdays practice was good because he not only let his teammates know how he felt, but he spilled some secrets on how to score and defend. The Lakers should be soaking up any tidbit of information Bryant shares. I think he just did a great job of getting everybody else fired up, Lakers first-year head coach Byron Scott said. Hes always fired up. Thats the great thing about him. Hes such a competitor. Like I said, when he comes out and he practices, the intensity level in practice goes sky-high. And he challenges guys. Its what you should do. Today, (the reserves) responded by getting their butt kicked. Scott went on to say Bryant brings out the best in guys, including trash- talker and reserve guard Nick Young, who went back-and-forth with Bryant during the heated practice. Whether it pays off Friday night in San Antonio remains to be seen. Los Angeles will start a three-game trip against the defending champion Spurs. We know its going to be a tough trip. Anytime you open with San Antonio, its going to be tough, Scott said. Bryant said he cant do the same things he used to because of his body. He has been limited in practice to rest for games, which is why Thursday was an important lesson for the Lakers at this stage. Bryant doesnt know if his appearance at practice will help the Lakers or raise the intensity level. Perhaps watching Bryant pass Hall of Famer Michael Jordan for third on the NBAs all-time scoring list will be more than enough motivation. The Lakers are last in opponents scoring at 110.1 ppg and will soon have two players in the top three in scoring. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928) and Jordan (32,292) are the top three scorers with Bryant (32,262) 31 points shy of passing his idol. Bryant was asked to compare himself with Air Jordan. I think were both cursed with the obsession of trying to be the best that we can. Its a blessing and a curse at the same time, Bryant said. I think were both very similar in that regard. The biggest difference between the two, according to Bryant, is that he had to play both shooting and point guard. Bryant was jealous of Jordan having Scottie Pippen for a teammate. Bryant reflected on what it will be like to pass MJ. Its a huge honor to be here in this position. I cant believe Ive scored that many points especially from where my career started, he said. Its a huge honor. It wasnt something I thought about growing up as a kid. It was championships. Being one of the top three scorers with former Lakers center Abdul-Jabbar is the coolest thing for Bryant. Passing his hero Jordan was never a thought. It wasnt a goal that I set out to accomplish. Being in that company with Michael and Kareem and the other great scorers, I think thats most fun part, Bryant said. Being a part of that group I grew up idolizing and learning from and aspiring to be one day, thats the true honor in it. Theres honor in losing, too. And the Lakers are doing plenty of it. Bryant may have said passing Jordan on the scoring list was never a goal and winning championships outweighs statistics. However, the next 31 points he posts will strengthen his case as the best to ever play. ' ' '

Defending champion Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany was third, trailing 0.PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Sidney Crosby will be back. Evgeni Malkin too. After that, what happens to the Pittsburgh Penguins over another post-season disappointment is anybodys guess. Dan Bylsma, the winningest coach in franchise history, may be out of a job. Ray Shero, the general manager who spent the last half-decade unsuccessfully trying to replicate the success of 2009, could also be gone. When Crosby lifted the Stanley Cup in triumph on that warm night in Detroit five years ago, it was supposed to mark the beginning of hockeys next dynasty. That hasnt materialized. A handful of maddening springs later, it might be time to move on. Bylsma allowed as much Tuesday night after the Penguins fell to the New York Rangers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, a 2-1 defeat that capped a stunning collapse after Pittsburgh grabbed a commanding 3-1 series lead. "You think about it being the last game," Bylsma said. While the Rangers exulted at one end of the Consol Energy Center ice after advancing to hockeys final four, the Penguins solemnly lined up for a handshake after losing a Game 7 at home for the third time in five seasons. This isnt the way it was supposed to go. Not this time. Despite losing over 500 man games to injury — easily the highest total in the NHL — Pittsburgh strolled to the Metropolitan Division title behind the steady and spectacular play of Crosby, who led the league in scoring and is a heavy favourite to win his second MVP award. After surviving a bumpy six-game series with plucky Columbus in the opening round, the Penguins appeared in total control after a 4-2 win in Game 4 against the weary Rangers. Then it all fell apart. A dismal 5-1 loss in Game 5 shifted momentum to the guys in the blue shirts. New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist did the rest, including 35 sublime saves in the deciding game. Defenceman Matt Niskanen called the debacle in Game 5 a "missed opportunity," one that could lead to significant change in a dressing room that has been among the most stable in the league. "When expectations are high and you ddont win, thats normal," Crosby said. Yeezy 700 v2 Black Outlet. "Im sure there will be a lot of questions." At the moment, there dont appear to be a lot of answers. Crosby insists hes healthy but lacked his otherworldly sharpness at times, scoring just one goal in 13 playoff games. "It wasnt a lack of effort or competing or anything like that," he said. "Id love to tear it up every series, but its not always the case. It doesnt make it any easier, Ill tell you that. Its tough losing as it is but when youre unable to contribute as much as youd like, its even tougher." Maybe, but its become all too common for one of the NHLs marquee franchises. The Penguins have sold out every home game since Valentines Day in 2007 and play a brand of entertaining hockey that is overwhelmingly successful in the regular season but doesnt always translate in the tight-checking crucible of the playoffs. The leagues top power play during the regular season went just 1 for 20 with the man advantage against New York. Unable to generate much offence from in front of the net, the Penguins spent most of the last three games unsuccessfully peppering Lundqvist from long distance. Its a path that led only to frustration and an all-too-familiar result: the Penguins watching another team skate off the ice in celebration. It happened in 2010, when Pittsburgh fell to Montreal at home in Game 7. It happened last spring, when the Penguins failed to lead the Boston Bruins for a single second while getting swept out of the conference finals. Ray Shero doubled down after seeing his team silenced by the Bruins. He awarded Bylsma a two-year extension, signed Malkin and defenceman Kris Letang to long-term deals and brought back defenceman Rob Scuderi to give the blue line some heft. Different path. Same result. Only this time there will be no doubling down. There will be only change. "Its all tough," Malkin said. "We have great teammates here. We work hard. But 3-1 up in series and last three games we lost, its tough. See you next season, I dont know." Neither does anybody else. ' ' '
KITCHENER, Ont. Jason Williams Jersey . -- Crystal Webster avoided elimination at the 2013 Capital One Road to the Roar Olympic pre-trial curling tournament with an 8-5 win over Amber Holland on Thursday. Websters Calgary rink took control from the start of the C-event game. She took a 4-2 lead in the fourth end when Hollands soft tap-back attempt wrecked on a guard, leaving an open draw for two points. A single in the ninth end was too little too late for Reginas Holland, who was eliminated from competition after suffering her third loss. "We knew we had to play better today," said Webster, referring to the teams two previous losses. "We played miles better than we have the two previous games. We loved the ice today, so that made us feel so much better." Webster credits third Cathy Overton-Clapham for bringing some much-needed experience to a team that has yet to compete at the international level. "We thought, in an Olympic year, it would be great to bring that experience on to our team," she said. "And were still learning from each other of course. Weve tried to play as much as could leading up the Pre-Trials, but we are getting better, and Im really enjoying having her experience next to me out there." Four other womens teams were on the ice Thursday morning in the B-event. Edmontons Val Sweeting traded ends with Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay, Ont., in a close game that was decided on last rock. Tied 7-7 heading into the tenth, Sweeting needed only a single for the 8-7 win. In the only other B-event womens game, Tracy Horgan of Sudbury, Ont., gave up a steal in the first end, then never looked back, forcing Calgarys Shannon Kleibrink to chase her in a 10-7 victory. Horgan applied pressure early on the 2006 Olympic bronze-medallist, scoring three in the third and following up with a steal of three. In the fifth, Horgans precision double resulted in a two more points and an 8-3 lead. Kleibrink fought back with a steal of one in the ninth, but it wasnt enough, and Horgan notched up another win. In the only mens game of the morning draw, Steve Laycock broke it open with three points in the final end to earn a 6-3 B-event win over Jake Higgs of Glencoe, Ont. Kleibrink, McCarville and Higgs now move to the C-event of the triple-elimination tournament and will be ousted with one more loss. Forward Bright Dike scored the games only goal in the 85th minute on a foggy night in Bradenton, Fla.ROME -- Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez scored either side of halftime as Juventus asserted its dominance in Serie A with a 2-0 win at AC Milan on Sunday. Striding toward its third consecutive title, the victory moved Juventus 11 points ahead of second-place Roma. "Only a tank could stop Juventus," new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf said. "They showed their strength and Tevez provided the difference. Hes a great player." Milan, which was starting to gain momentum under Seedorf, dropped to 10th, six points adrift of the European places. Milan started strongly with Kaka and Andrea Poli threatening in the first half but Juve took control when Llorente collected a pass from Stephan Lichtsteiner in the 44th to score from the edge of the box and highlight Milans porous defence. Then in the 68th, Tevez was left alone to find the target with a shot from 25 metres (yards) that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. It was Tevezs 15th goal of the season, putting him atop the Italian leagues scoring chart, one ahead of Fiorentinas Giuseppe Rossi, who has been out injured since January. Milan sorely missed Mario Balotelli, who is still recovering from a right shoulder injury. Making matters worse, midfielder Poli was taken to the hospital after getting hit in the face during a collision with Juventus defender Martin Caceres in the 51st. Earlier, third-placed Napoli was held to a 1-1 draw at relegation-threatened Livorno without its standout forward Gonzalo Higuain. Belgium midfielder Dries Mertens converted a penalty for Napoli in the 31st but Livorno equalized when a backheel effort from its 19-year-old Senegalese defender Mbaye Ibrahima resulted in an own-goal by Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the 39th. Still, Napoli moved seven points ahead of fourth-placed Fiorentina in the race for the final Champions League spot. Fiorentina, which was missing two key suspended midfielders in Borja Valero and David Pizarro, lost 1-0 at home to Lazio. Also, the Tuscan squads coach Vincenzo Montella served a touchline ban following the fallout from Mondays 2-2 draaw at Parma, which featured three red cards. Markelle Fultz Jersey. Higuain is among the Serie A leaders with 13 goals but was suspended for this match. His replacement, Goran Pandev, earned Napolis penalty with what appeared to be minimal contact from Livorno defender Federico Ceccherini, leading to protests from the hosts. Elsewhere, Parma beat 10-man Sassuolo 1-0 with a second-minute goal from Marco Parolo to move level with Hellas Verona in sixth place -- one point behind Inter Milan and the Europa League zone. Verona goalkeeper Rafael saved a 47th-minute penalty from Rolando Bianchi in a 0-0 draw at home with Bologna. Also, Sampdoria won 2-0 at Torino with goals from Stefano Okaka and Manolo Gabbiadini; Atalanta beat 10-man Chievo Verona 2-1 after strikes by Carlos Carmona in the 21st and a winner from Luca Cigarini in the 85th; and Genoa beat 10-man Catania 2-0 with goals from Luca Antonelli and Stefano Sturaro. Earlier in the lunchtime fixture, Cagliari kept its focus to beat visiting Udinese 3-0 amid speculation that the Sardinian club could be sold. Colombian forward Victor Ibarbo put Cagliari ahead in the 18th, Uruguayan midfielder Matias Vecino doubled the lead in the 81st and Macedonian midfielder Agim Ibraimi found the target in the 89th. Udinese captain Antonio Di Natale threatened several times in the first half, hitting the crossbar with a deflected shot on one occasion. The victory moved Cagliari level with Udinese in 14th place. Cagliari president Massimo Cellino attended the match, his first stadium appearance since January. Fans greeted him with chants of "We want a president." Eleonora Sport Ltd., which is run by the Cellino family, is on the verge of taking over a 75 per cent stake in fallen English power Leeds, leading many to believe Cellino is losing interest in Cagliari, which has been beset by stadium troubles. MINNEAPOLIS -- Hours after trading Vidal Nuno to Arizona for Brandon McCarthy and cutting outfielder Alfonso Soriano, the New York Yankees took a nine-run lead by the fourth inning and seemed set for a laugher at Target Field. Tomas Tatar Jersey . The game ended with the potential go-ahead run at the plate. Jacoby Ellsbury homered, doubled and drove in four runs as Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 9-7 Sunday after their roster shakeup and moved back above .500 at 44-43. "Sometimes you cant really pinpoint it, but we like where were at right now," Ellsbury said. "Hopefully keep it rolling." Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki each had three hits for the Yankees, who have won 14 of 18 overall at Target Field. Jeters ninth-inning single made him the eighth player to reach 3,400 hits. "We pay a little bit of attention, but I dont think he pays too close attention to it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Obviously, hes going to end up way up there in record books. He pays more attention to wins, and thats what we worry about." New York took three of four from the Twins after losing nine of its previous 11. The 38-year-old Soriano is in the final year of a $136 million, eight-year contract he signed with the Chicago Cubs, who traded him last summer to the Yankees, where he began his big league career. He was hitting .221 this season with six homers and 23 RBIs in 67 games. New York has 10 days to trade Soriano or place him on unconditional waivers. "Hes a guy thats used to playing every day," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Wasnt every day for him. Maybe it was harder for him to get going, not sure. Im sure hes extremely disappointed." New York catcher Brian McCann returned to the lineup after missing two games because of a sore foot and doubled home Jeter in the first. Ellsburys three-run homer off Ricky Nolasco (5-7) capped a four-run burst in the second that made it 6-0. Hiroki Kuroda (6-6) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings, his poorest outing since mid-June. Minnesota closed with four runs in the fourth, and one in each of the last three innings. After Oswaldo Arcias two-out RBI single pulled the Twins within two runs and left runners at the corners, David Robertson got Kurt Suzuki to hit a grounder to shortstop, where Jeter threw to second baseman Brian Roberts for the final out. Robertson got his 21st save in 23 chances. Jeter drove in two runs in his last scheduled game at Minnesota, although hes expected back later this month for the All-Star game. Nolasco lasted a season-low two innings as Minnesota lost for the 10th time in 13 games. "They hit everything he threw up there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We got to go better than that. He did nothing for us today. He didnt give us a chance." Trevor Plouffe had an RBI double in the fourth and Chris Colabello followed with a two-run homer, his second home run in three games since his recall from the minors. Plouffe added a solo home run in the eighth. "Cant keep getting behind like this. It just gets back to that," Gardenhire said. "Its the starting pitching. Its not about anything other than that. Weve been struggling scoring runs. We finally put some on the board. But you start a game 6-0, thats no way to play baseball." ROME -- Francesco Totti scored the opener and Roma went on to beat Udinese 3-2 Monday to maintain its three-point lead over Napoli in the race for Italys last direct Champions League spot. Third-place Napoli had won earlier, with Gonzalo Higuain scoring a controversial goal in the 90th minute of a 1-0 victory at Torino. The top two finishers in Serie A gain direct entry to the Champions League, while the third-place finisher goes into the last playoff round. Napoli beat Roma 1-0 last weekend, although Roma beat its southern rival 2-0 in October and so holds the head-to-head edge. Roma also has a game in hand. "We need to keep this pace until the end of the season," said Totti, who scored off a rebound from the centre of the area in the 22nd. It was Tottis sixth goal in 16 appearances this season and the 233rd of his Serie A career, second only to record-holder Silvio Piolas 274. The 37-year-old Roma Totti had been out for a month due to a minor injury. Mattia Destro added another for Roma in the 30th, dribbling by the goalkeeper and shooting into an empty net after collecting a pass from Gervinho. Giampaolo Pinzi pulled onne back for Udinese in the 51st with a long, angled shot and then Romas Greece defender Vasilis Torosidis restored the two-goal lead in the 69th with a long left-footed effort that appeared to surprise the defence -- perhaps because Torosidis usually favours his right foot, and is not known for his shooting skills. In Turin, Higuain appeared to foul Torino defender Kamil Glik with a push outside the area after collecting a long pass from Marek Hamsik then dribbled in to score with an angled shot that Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli got his hands on and could have done better to stop. "I dont know if it was a foul," Higuain said. "It was a quick play." It was Higuains 14th goal this season, after transferring from Real Madrid in July, moving him one behind Juventus Carlos Tevez for the Serie A scoring lead. Napoli had rarely threatened for most of the match, and Torinos Cesare Bovo and Riccardo Meggiorini hit the post either side of halftime. Torino, which has lost five of its last six matches, remained 10th. ' ' '

James Neal Jersey . Playing for the first time in two years at the season-ending tournament, Nadal traded breaks early but then became untouchable on serve, dictating the play from the baseline and forcing third-ranked Ferrer into a stack of errors. Nadal converted six of seven break points. He claimed his 21st win in 26 matches against Ferrer -- but only his first indoors -- and avenged his loss in their Paris Masters semifinal last week. "He played a lot better than me in Paris but today I played a little bit better than him and its important for my confidence to start with a victory after Paris," Nadal said "There is no rest but the energy of this stadium is fantastic." Nadal and Ferrer play in Group A, alongside Stanislas Wawrinka, who beat Tomas Berdych in his opening match on Monday. He will be guaranteed of the year-end No. 1 spot if he wins a second match at O2 Arena. He broke Ferrer in the first game with a forehand winner down the line but Ferrer broke back immediately, and spectators braced themselves for a hard-fought contest. But Nadal, who did not play last year because of his bad knee, then dropped only one point on his next three service games while Ferrer gave easy points and struggled to keep the ball in the court. Nadal broke again for 3-2 and earned three set points with a brilliant forehand passing shot down the line before sealing the set when Ferrer made another unforced error to drop his serve at love. Nadal then built a 5-0 lead but Ferrer refused to surrender easily, and mounted a comeback playing more aggressively and taking chances at the net. RANGERS TAKE OT WIN Derick Brassard scored at 3:06 of overtime to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game One. The Rangers third line made the most of their opportunities for the night, as Benoit Pouliot scored the Rangers first goal as well as assisting on the game-winner. Brassard and Pouliot also had the Rangers best possession stats for the game, on the ice for 60% of the shot attempts at 5-on-5. The most notable story for the Penguins is that Sidney Crosby was held off the scoresheet, but also was on for all three Rangers goals. Its been a rough start to the postseason for Crosby. Even though he has six assists in seven games and his puck possession numbers are strong, Crosby is minus-5 and still seeking his first goal of the postseason. Hes still getting chances -- his 3.14 shots on goal per game is barely below his regular-season average of 3.24 per game -- but until he gets that first goal, hes going to be under more scrutiny than usual. Penguins wingers Jussi Jokinen and James Neal were on the ice for more than 70% of 5-on-5 shot attempts and Neal scored Pittsburghs second goal, but the ice was tilted favourably in their direction -- they started more than 75% of their shifts in the offensive zone. Rangers D Dan Girardi chipped in a couple of assists. Only once in 81 games during the regular season did Girardi record two assists in a game. The bad news for the Penguins is that they won the puck possession battle, which doesnt fit the profile of these teams entering the postseason, but that still wasnt enough to get away with the win. Getting beat by the Rangers third line is all the more troubling because the Penguins depth and goaltending are areas in which they would expect to have a deficit when compared to the Rangers and thats exactly how Game One played out. KANE PUTS ON A SHOW Blackhawks wingers Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell each scored a pair of goals and Chicago knocked off the Minnesota Wild, 5-2, in Game One. Kane broke a 2-2 tie with 11:38 remaining in the third period, on a highlight-reel goal, then added another with 3:13 remaining to settle the matter before Bickell added an empty-netter. Kane now has five goals and eight points in seven games this postseason, while Bickell has four goals and five points in seven games. Blackhawks RW Marian Hossa had three points (1 G, 2 A), giving him more points already in this series than he managed in six first-round games against St. Louis. No matter, no one in this years playoffs has more than Hossas 118 career playoff points. LW Patrick Sharp, who had one point in Round One, added two assists in Game One against Minnesota, while D Brent Seabrook contributed two more assists, giving him eight points (2 G, 6 A) in four games. To their credit, the Wild didnt wilt after falling behind 2-0. They outshot the Blackhawks 17-3 in the second period, then scored twice in the first seven minutes of the third to even things up; not for long it turned out. Wild D Jonas Brodin had the best possession numbers for Minnesota at 5-on-5, 73.7% of shot attempts, but it was a rough night for him, as he had six minutes in penalties and was in the box for Chicagos first two goals. D Clayton Stoner also had an eventful game for the Wild, getting credited with a goal (knocked in by Johnny Oduyas skate) and delivering a game-high six hits, including one that knocked Blackhawks RW Andrew Shaw out of the game in the first period. This game showed just how difficult the task at hand is for the Wild. They fought hard to come back, outshot the Blackhawks 32-21 (48-37 in 5-on-5 shot attempts), but they couldnt contain the Blackhawks power play or prevent Kane from getting loose. On top of that, the Wild were fortunate enough to have a Blackhawks goal disallowed in the first period, so there is some work to be done if they are going to make a series out of this. On the plus side, the Wild did show that they can take the play to the Blackhawks at times, so they will have to continue doing so because its difficult to expect Ilya Bryzgalov to get the better of Corey Crawford in the goaltending matchup. It only seemed to awaken the four-time league MVP. James scored 19 of his game-high 31 points after sustaining a thigh bruise early in the third quarter, helping the Miami Heat earn a first-round sweep of the Charlotte Bobcats with a 109-98 victory Monday night. He finished Game 4 10 of 19 from the field and had nine assists. "Its definitely sore," James said. "Im fortunate we were able to close out tonight and I can give it a little rest." He should have plenty of time. The two-time defending NBA champions will await the winner of Brooklyn-Toronto series, which is tied 2-2. If that series goes the distance it wont wrap up until Sunday. James said playing Charlotte was a good first test and Miami is headed in the right direction as it looks to win its third straight NBA championship. "We got tested by a young, scrappy Bobcats team," said James, who averaged 36.2 points in eight games against Charlotte this season. "We responded with a championship-type attitude." Chris Bosh added 17 points and Dwyane Wade battled through foul trouble and finished with 15 as Miami extended its winning streak over Charlotte to 20 games. The Heat improved to 16-2 in first-round games since James arrival four years ago. This was the second straight year the Heat swept their first-round series, taking out Milwaukee in four games last season. This was Miamis ninth consecutive series victory. "We improved every game and thats the most important thing about this series," James said. Miami began to take control midway through the third quarter shortly after James gave his teammates a scare when he drove to the basket from the left wing and his right thigh collided with Bismack Biyombos knee, sending James to the floor. Concerned teammates gathered around him and he was down for about a minute. James eventually got up and hobbled to the bench where sat down during a timeout. But he stayed in the game. After the timeout he buried a 3-pointer and a long jumper before a one-handed dunk to help give Miami a 73-66 lead with 4:51 left in the third quarter. Miami pushed the lead to 13 when Norris Cole knocked down a 3-point buzzer-beater from the right corner aat the end of the quarter. Kings Jerseys 2021. Charlotte never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter. Down the stretch, the Heat went to James time and time again with Wade on the bench with five fouls. James scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a size advantage against Gerald Henderson. "LeBron was terrific during that stretch of the fourth quarter," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I thought the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter there was great execution and trust and the ball was moving and it was just working to the open guy. That was encouraging to see, especially at that time in the game." The Bobcats played without Al Jefferson, their leading scorer and rebounder who has been bothered by a foot injury since the first quarter of Game 1. "If you take away the best offensive player from any team in the league it dramatically changes your team," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Kemba Walker picked up the slack, playing tough throughout and finishing with 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting. "He showed that he is not afraid of the moment," Clifford said. "He had a really good year and finished in a good way so we should be happy about him." Walker called the game a good learning experience for the inexperienced Bobcats. "At the same time its our first go-around in the playoffs for a lot of us and we can only go up from here," Walker said. In the end, turnovers again spelled doom for the Bobcats. They turned it over 16 times, leading to 22 Heat points, including two dunks by James. The loss signalled the end of an era for the Bobcats. They will become the Hornets next season. Before the game the Heat showed solidarity with the Los Angeles Clippers over the Donald Sterling controversy. Like the Clippers on Sunday, the Heat ran out of the tunnel wearing their warmups, huddled at centre court and tossed their white shooting T-shirts to the ground. They then went through their pregame routine with their red Heat warmup jerseys inside out, hiding the teams logo. NOTES: Charlotte never won a post-season game as the Bobcats in franchise history. ... James scored at least 20 points in all four games. ... MYRTLE BEACH, S. Blazers Jerseys 2020 .C. -- Johan Kok shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to match The Dunes Golf & Beach Club competitive record and share the first-round lead in the PGA Professional National Championship. Kok, the 34-year-old former University of South Carolina player from South Africa, is the PGA general manager at Temple Hills Country Club in Brentwood, Tennessee. The top 20 will get spots in the PGA Championship at Valhalla in August in Louisville, Kentucky. "This is a chance to play in a major," Kok said. "It may not happen for me this week after all is said and done, but Im happy to be here and get that chance." Dave McNabb, the 48-year-old PGA head professional at Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern, Pennsylvania, opened with a 67 at Grande Dunes Resort Club. "I feel today that I took advantage of a fantastic golf course that was set up to score," McNabb said. "Conditions were ideal. Im looking forward to heading to The Dunes tomorrow and trying to do the same. You have to be in the right spot on the greens." Kok one-putted 11 greens at The Dunes, the site of the final two rounds in the 72-hole tournament. He matched the course record set by Billy Joe Patton in the 1960 Southern Amateur and Ben Crenshaw in the 1973 PGA Tour Qualifying School. The Senior Tour Championship, conducted at The Dunes from 1994-1999, used a shorter yardage when Jay Sigel shot a 63 in 1994. Phil Jackson wont be hiring himself to coach the Knicks. Two days after firing Mike Woodson, Jackson reiterated Wednesday that he wont be returning to the bench, despite the fact that even fiancee Jeanie Buss told him he should. But Jackson, who retired from coaching in 2011 after winning an NBA-record 11 titles, said his body isnt up to doing the job. "Jeanie Buss was here with the Board of Governors last week and stayed through the weekend, and tried to encourage me to coach the team. And if theres anyone that can encourage me to do anything, its Jeanie Buss. But I was able to withstand her arguments the whole time," Jackson said at the Knicks training centre. So the new team president said hes looking for a leader with the personality and charisma to succeed in New York. He hopes to talk with Steve Kerr, the TNT analyst frequently mentioned as the leading candidate, sometime within the next month. "New York, I think, demands a personality, a person that the fans can believe in, a person that has some confidence, has the charismatic appeal, and I think has a forward-looking idea about the game," Jackson said. He believes Kerr, who played for him in Chicago and served as general manager of the Phoenix Suns, could be that person. He discussed Kerrs potential interest in coaching last year when a group was trying to buy the Sacramento Kings and move them to Seattle. Jackson was prepared to run their basketball operations if that happened. He and Kerr spoke again earlier this year about basketball, so Jackson is comfortable they share the same view of how the game should be played. "I know philosophically we have a strong connection. Whether hes able to take a job like this, I dont know," Jackson said. "I will get in a conversation with him later on this month and talk to him about and see where hes at as far as his desire to coach." Jackson saidd he didnt have a timetable beyond wanting a coach in place before the July summer league. Stitched Blazers Jerseys. He has other candidates in mind, but said: "You dont want to know their names. I dont want you to have their names." Jacksons will always come up because of his coaching legacy. Madison Square Garden Chairman James Dolan first talked to Jackson around the holidays about coaching the team, but Jackson declined before they began discussing a management position. Jackson said Buss, whose family owns the Lakers, encouraged him to reconsider because it was "low risk" for him and a "do-what-you-know-best type of thing." But he said hes already made up his mind. "Right now I know physically what I can do," Jackson said. "Thats something that I dont think physically I can do." Jackson hopes Carmelo Anthony wont change his mind, either. Anthony plans to become a free agent this summer and has said he would take less than a maximum salary if it helped build a winning team. Jackson, noting that Tim Duncan and the Miami Heats Big Three had sacrificed salary in the past, said he would talk to Anthony about the benefits of doing the same. "Thats the beginning of team play," Jackson said. "Its really hard to just have one or two top stars, max players, and put together a team with enough talent. Youve got to have people making sacrifices financially, so we hope that Carmelo is true to his word, and we understand what its going to take and well present that to him at that time." The Knicks would have to pay Anthony more than $120 million over five years if he insisted on a max contract. Anthony was one of the only bright spots on a 37-45 team that missed the playoffs. The Knicks would like to keep him. "Im all about moving forward. Just deal with what is and move forward," Jackson said. "If its in the cards, man, are we fortunate. If its not in the cards, man, are we fortunate. Were going forward anyway." ' ' '
(SportsNetwork. Buy Under Armour Wholesale .com) - The point guard and quarterback share interesting similarities in an otherwise opposite world of sports. A point guard in basketball is often referred to as the quarterback or floor general of the hardwood. They take instructions and facilitate them among teammates with the end result a productive combination. Point guards and quarterbacks are responsible for orchestrating a winning formula in their respective sports, and the most common job requirement for each position is getting the ball into a playmakers hands. The NFL is going through another golden age of quarterbacks with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Andrew Luck and a solid tier No. 2 of signal callers right behind. Its up for debate if this generation of QBs exceeds the days of Dan Marino, Joe Montana, John Elway and Warren Moon. Point guards are prosperous in the NBA and the Rajon Rondo trade piques the interest of those who deliberate over the best in basketball. Below is an unofficial, and opinionated, list of the top 10 point guards: 10. Darren Collison (Sacramento Kings) - Collison is in his first season with the Kings and is hoping to find a permanent home after stints with the Los Angeles Clippers and Dallas Mavericks the previous two seasons. He leads the Kings with 6.1 assists per game and is dealing with a team under new supervision with the recent firing of Mike Malone. DeMarcus Cousins is back from an illness, so Collisons job will be easier. Rudy Gay is at his disposal under Tyrone Corbins philosophy. 9. Rajon Rondo (Dallas Mavericks) - Rumored to be on the trading block for a few years, Rondo was finally shipped out of Beantown to the successful surroundings of Dallas. Not known anymore as a high-powered scorer, Rondo does possess the knack for distributing the ball. An ACL tear with Rondo may have hampered Bostons bargaining power, but the deal was done and now he has four scorers to work with in Nowitzki, Ellis, Chandler and Parsons. Rondos a solid defender and rebounder with an NBA-high 10.8 assists per game, and is joining the highest-scoring team in the league. 8. Mike Conley (Memphis Grizzlies) - Conley is loving the opportunity he has playing with the Grizzlies. Hes got Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol down low and is also a scorer himself with a career-high 17.6 points per game, which is second on the team. Conley doesnt slouch on defense either for Memphis, one of the top defensive units in the association. 7. Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers) - Irving no longer has to carry the Cleveland torch through futility because LeBron James and Kevin Love are here to make it all better. Irving does like to get his share of shots, however, and is arguably the top scoring PG in the game. Irving has scored 20 or more points on 14 occasions this season and has dished out five or more assists in each of the past seven games. He has the dream job for now with LBJ and Love. 6. Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors) - He may resemble Bad Boy label rapper Mase, but Lowry can mix it up with anyone on the floor. Lowry was looked upon to carry the Raptors and keep them even-keeled when star guard DeMar DeRozan went down with a severe groin injury. Lowry knows how to get everyone involved and learned that at a young age. The former Villanova standout has handed out 10 or more assists five times in December and leads the team with 36 steals. Toronto is already the best in the East and Lowry deserves the credit. 5. Ty Lawson (Denver Nuggets) - A scrappy, compact ball of fire, Lawson lets the Nuggets breathe where the air doesnt come easy. Lawson, who has posted a double-double in 10 of his last 13 games, is averaging 15.4 points, a career- high 10.6 assists and 1.50 steals in almost 38 minutes a night. Lawson and Washington Wizards guard John Wall are tied for second in assists with 10.6. Lawson is Denvers MVP so far and if Kenneth Faried can pick up his game, maybe the Nuggets can make a run for the playoffs. Lawson leads the NBA in drives to the basket, posting 15.0 ppg in that scenario, and has handed out nine or more assists over the past 18 games. He has 16 games with 10-plus assists this season. 4. Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) - One of the smoothest point guards in the better of the two conferences, Lillard is young and still has room to grow. For how difficult that may be to realize, Lillard is second on the team with 20.8 points and first in assists (6.2) and steals (1.5). Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge are making sweet music in Rip City and the dangerous tandem is about to begin a difficult stretch of games. Portlands mettle will be tested during the stretch and Lillard will be up for the challenge. Lillard is known for his 3-point prowess, another weapon the Blazers have utilized. Only four players in NBA history have more points and assists in their first two seasons (Robertson, Archibald, Iverson, James). 3a Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors) - Curry was the impetus for Golden States franchise-record 16-game winning streak and some credit should deservedly be directed toward Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Marreese Speights. Curry leads all starting point guards with 23.9 points and has handed out 7.6 assists. The sharpshooting Curry has the Warriors off to a 21-3 start, the best in franchise history. Golden State has no issues playing on the road as evidenced by a 13-2 record. Thompson said about a week ago the Warriors are good without Curry, but great with him. 3b Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder) - Westbrook is a dynamic scorer and facilitator, and suffered a scare early this season with a hand injury. Hes back and doing what he does best: run the floor, speed past defenders and stuff the stat sheet. Westbrook and the Thunder are beginning to click, but the quick guard may have to deal without Kevin Durant again after the reigning NBA MVP sustained an ankle injury in the most recent game. OKC is 8-4 with Westbrook in the lineup and he has scored at least 20 points 11 times. KD, Westbrook, Reggie Jackson and Serge Ibaka should capture a fifth or sixth seed in the playoffs unless health becomes an issue again. 2. John Wall (Washington Wizards) - This is supposed to be the year the Wizards overthrow the Miami Heat in both the Southeast Division and Eastern Conference. Toronto, Atlanta and Cleveland may have something to say about that in the East. Wall leads the Wizards in points (17.8), assists (10.6) and steals (2.2), and just matched a career-high with 17 assists in a win over Minnesota. Wall has handed out 10-plus assists eight times in the past nine games and has stepped it up in home defense, posting 18.7 points, 11.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds at the Verizon Center. Wall, Bradley Beal and Marcin Gortat are primed to make a big run if all goes well. 1. Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers) - Whats not to like about CP3? Nothing. The guy can do it all: pass the rock, score the rock and land clients an affordable State Farm Insurance rate. Of course the latter was a reference to the companys popular insurance ads, but Paul is ensuring the success rate of the Los Angeles Clippers for years to come. Its quite elementary for Paul, who has it easy with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan to loft the ball to. Jamal Crawford providing a lift off the bench helps, too. Paul is a strong defender with 1.9 steals per game to go along with 9.7 assists, and is the cream of the NBA crop of point guards. Honorable mention - Tony Parker, Derrick Rose, Jeff Teague, Deron Williams, Kemba Walker, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Trey Burke, Mario Chalmers, Eric Bledsoe.
